How to Delete a Reddit Account in 2026?
If you want to delete a Reddit account permanently, Reddit currently allows you to do it from its website, iPhone app or Android app.
Before you delete the account, however, there is one important limitation to understand:
Deleting your Reddit account does not automatically delete the posts, comments, messages or chats you created while using it.
Reddit removes the account and disassociates your username from that activity, but posts and comments can remain online unless you delete them beforehand.
Account deletion is also permanent. Once the process is completed, the account cannot be reactivated and the username cannot be reused.
This guide explains how to delete your Reddit account in 2026 on desktop, iPhone and Android, what to check before you do it and what happens to your content afterward.
Can You Permanently Delete a Reddit Account?
Yes.
Reddit currently allows users to permanently delete their accounts through:
- reddit.com in a desktop browser;
- Old Reddit;
- the Reddit app for iOS;
- the Reddit app for Android.
Deleting the account is different from simply logging out, uninstalling the app or stopping using Reddit.
Once the account is deleted, Reddit says it cannot be reactivated and its administrators cannot restore it for you.
Your username also becomes unavailable and cannot be used to sign in again or registered for another account.
What Should You Do Before Deleting Your Reddit Account?
Do not treat account deletion as a cleanup tool.
Before permanently closing the account, review what you may want to remove, save or cancel first.
Delete Posts or Comments You Do Not Want to Remain Online
Reddit account deletion does not automatically erase your posts or comments.
After the account is deleted, that content can remain on Reddit but becomes disassociated from your username.
If there are posts or comments you specifically want removed, deal with them before deleting the account while you still have access to it.
If your main goal is cleaning old activity rather than closing the account itself, read our guide on how to delete your Reddit history.
That is a different process from deleting the account.
Review Anything You Want to Keep
Once the account is gone, you will lose access to it.
Before deleting it, consider whether there is information, content or account history you still need access to.
Do this before starting an irreversible account deletion.
Cancel Reddit Premium if You Have an Active Subscription
Deleting a Reddit account does not automatically cancel Reddit Premium.
If you have an active subscription, cancel it separately before deleting the account so you do not leave a subscription active after losing access to the profile.
Check How You Created the Account
The deletion process can vary slightly depending on how you signed up.
For example, an account connected to Google or Apple may need to be disconnected before deletion.
An account created with a phone number but without a password can require a verification code.
Knowing how you created the account can prevent unnecessary errors during deletion.
How to Delete a Reddit Account on Desktop
If you use Reddit in a desktop browser, you can delete the account from your account settings.
How to Delete Your Account on Reddit.com
Reddit’s current process is:
- Log in to the Reddit account you want to delete.
- Open your Account Settings.
- Scroll to the Advanced section.
- Select Delete Account.
- Enter the required account information.
- Confirm that you understand deleted accounts cannot be recovered.
- Select Delete to complete the request.
Reddit requires the appropriate account credentials to confirm deletion.
You can review Reddit’s current instructions in its official account deletion guide.
What If You Signed Up With Google or Apple?
If you created the Reddit account using a Google account or Apple ID, Reddit may require you to disconnect that authorization first.
From your account settings, find the account authorization or connected-account section and disconnect the Google account or Apple ID used when signing up.
If you do not already have a Reddit password, Reddit may ask you to create one as part of that process.
You can then return to the account deletion process.
Can You Delete an Account Through Old Reddit?
Yes.
Reddit still lists Old Reddit as another available deletion route.
From Old Reddit, open the delete tab in preferences, enter the required username and password and confirm the account deletion.
This route can also be useful if reddit.com repeatedly produces an error during deletion.
How to Delete a Reddit Account on iPhone
You can also delete your account directly from Reddit’s native iOS app.
Reddit’s current iPhone process is:
- Open the Reddit app and tap your avatar.
- Open the hamburger menu near the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Scroll down to the Support section.
- Tap Delete account.
- Follow the confirmation steps shown by Reddit.
Make sure you have already dealt with any posts or comments you want removed before completing the final confirmation.
How to Delete a Reddit Account on Android
The Android process is slightly different.
Reddit currently instructs Android users to:
- Open the Reddit app and tap the avatar in the top-right corner.
- Open the hamburger menu.
- Select Settings.
- Tap Account settings for u/username.
- Scroll to the bottom of the screen.
- Select Delete account.
- Complete Reddit’s confirmation process.
As with desktop and iOS, the deletion is intended to be permanent.
What If You Created Your Reddit Account With a Phone Number?
An account created using a phone number may have a slightly different confirmation process.
Reddit currently states that if the account was created with a phone number and you never set a password, selecting Delete account triggers a six-digit verification code.
Use that code to confirm the account deletion.
If you have trouble completing the process, verify that you are still able to access the phone number associated with the account.
What Happens After You Delete a Reddit Account?
Deleting the account changes several things, but it does not erase every piece of content associated with the account.
Your Profile Is Removed
Reddit removes the profile and disassociates the username from information such as:
- post history;
- comment history;
- karma;
- cake day;
- avatar;
- other profile information.
Someone who later opens a direct link to the deleted profile should see that the account has been deleted.
Your Username Cannot Be Reused
The username associated with a deleted Reddit account becomes unusable.
You cannot sign back in using that username and password, and deleting the account does not release the username so that you or someone else can register it again.
Your Posts and Comments Can Remain Online
This is one of the most important consequences to understand.
Posts and comments created by the deleted account can remain on Reddit.
What changes is their association with the account: other users can no longer identify the deleted profile as their author through the normal account connection.
If you want specific posts or comments deleted rather than merely disassociated, remove them before deleting the account.
Your Messages and Chats Can Remain
Messages you sent and chats you participated in can also remain after account deletion.
Reddit says these become disassociated from the deleted account, meaning the username is no longer shown as their source in the same way.
Account deletion should therefore not be viewed as a method for retroactively erasing every interaction you have had on the platform.
Reddit Begins a Server-Side Deletion or Anonymization Process
Reddit states that after an account is deleted, it initiates a process that commences within 90 days to safely remove or anonymize the account from its servers.
This wording is important.
It does not mean you should expect the account to remain normally usable for 90 days.
The 90-day reference relates to Reddit’s internal deletion or anonymization process after the deletion request has been made.
Does Deleting a Reddit Account Delete Your Posts and Comments?
No.
Deleting the account and deleting its content are separate actions.
Reddit explicitly states that posts and comments can remain after account deletion.
They become disassociated from the deleted profile instead.
If removing old activity is your actual objective, handle that while you still have access to the account rather than assuming closing the profile will automatically erase everything.
Does Deleting a Reddit Account Delete Messages and Chats?
No — not automatically.
Messages and chats can remain after the account is deleted.
Reddit describes them as becoming disassociated from the deleted account.
That means account deletion primarily removes the account identity and access rather than acting as a universal eraser for every historical interaction.
Can You Recover a Deleted Reddit Account?
No.
Reddit says account deletion is irreversible.
Once the account has been deleted:
- you cannot reactivate it;
- you cannot log back in using the old credentials;
- Reddit administrators cannot restore it for you.
For that reason, review the account carefully before completing the final deletion confirmation.
Can You Reuse the Same Reddit Username After Deletion?
No.
A deleted Reddit username does not become available for registration again.
This is another reason to treat the decision as permanent.
If keeping the username matters to you, deleting the account is not a temporary way to deactivate it.
Does Deleting Your Reddit Account Cancel Reddit Premium?
No.
If you are a Reddit Premium subscriber, Reddit says you must cancel the subscription separately.
Do this before account deletion.
Deleting the profile without first addressing the subscription can leave you without normal account access while the subscription itself has not been automatically cancelled.
Why Won’t Reddit Let Me Delete My Account?
If Reddit shows an error when you try to delete the account, there are several things worth checking before trying again.
Reddit provides a separate account deletion troubleshooting guide for this situation.
Check Your Username and Password
Make sure the account credentials are correct.
If you are uncertain about the password, reset it before trying to delete the account again.
Disconnect Google or Apple
If the Reddit account was created through Google or Apple, disconnect that account authorization before attempting deletion.
You may also need to establish a Reddit password if the account does not already have one.
Try Another Browser Session
If the problem happens on the web, Reddit recommends troubleshooting browser-related issues.
Possible steps include:
- clearing browser cookies or cache;
- disabling browser extensions temporarily;
- using an incognito or private browsing window.
Try Old Reddit
If reddit.com continues to return a deletion error, Reddit also recommends trying the deletion process through Old Reddit.
This can help determine whether the problem is related to the current website interface rather than the account itself.
Can Reddit Support Delete Your Account for You?
No.
Reddit states that its administrators cannot delete an account on a user’s behalf.
You need to complete the account deletion process yourself through one of Reddit’s supported methods.
If a technical problem prevents you from doing that, troubleshoot the issue rather than assuming a Reddit administrator can manually close the account for you.
Should You Delete Your Reddit Account or Just Clean Up Your Activity?
These are two different goals.
Deleting the account may make sense if:
- you no longer want to use the Reddit account;
- you understand that deletion is permanent;
- you do not need to recover the username later;
- you have already reviewed the content you created;
- you have dealt with any active subscription.
Cleaning up your activity may make more sense if:
- you want to keep the account;
- your concern is old posts or comments;
- you want to remove particular pieces of content;
- you want to reduce visible account history without closing the profile.
Closing the account is not a replacement for deleting content.
Choose the option that matches the actual outcome you want.
A Simple Checklist Before You Delete Your Reddit Account
Before you confirm permanent account deletion, check the following:
- Review your posts and comments. Delete anything you do not want to remain online.
- Review your messages and account activity. Understand what account deletion will and will not remove.
- Cancel Reddit Premium. Account deletion does not automatically cancel it.
- Check your login method. Google, Apple or phone-based accounts may require additional confirmation steps.
- Save anything you still need. You will lose access to the account.
- Confirm you understand the decision is permanent. Reddit cannot restore the account afterward.
- Delete the account through Reddit’s supported process.
The most important distinction is simple: deleting a Reddit account removes your account, but it does not automatically delete the content you created.
Review that content first, then close the account only when you are sure you no longer need access to it.
