Reddit Post Status Explained: Locked, Archived and Quarantined

If a Reddit post is locked, archived or located inside a quarantined community, that does not necessarily mean the content has been removed.

These terms describe different conditions on Reddit, and each one changes how users can interact with or discover content in a different way.

A locked Reddit post restricts new comments. An archived Reddit post can no longer receive votes or comments when the community has post archiving enabled. A quarantined community has additional access and discovery restrictions applied by Reddit.

There is also an important technical distinction:

Reddit quarantines communities rather than individual posts. A post may be affected because it belongs to a quarantined community, but quarantine itself is a community-level status.

This guide explains what each status means, what users can still do and why locked, archived or quarantined content should not automatically be treated as deleted or removed.

Reddit Post Status Explained: What Do These Labels Actually Mean?

Reddit uses different controls and statuses to manage how posts and communities function.

The three terms covered in this guide are not interchangeable.

  • Locked: affects commenting on a post or comment.
  • Archived: affects interaction with older posts when a community has archiving enabled.
  • Quarantined: applies to an entire community and affects access and discovery across Reddit.

None of these statuses automatically means that the underlying Reddit content has been deleted.

A post can remain visible while being locked. An archived post can remain accessible even though users can no longer vote or comment. Content inside a quarantined community can also continue to exist while access to the community is restricted.

The practical question is therefore not simply:

“Is this Reddit post restricted?”

It is:

“What type of restriction applies, and what does that restriction actually change?”

What Does “Locked” Mean on Reddit?

A locked Reddit post is a post where new comments have been restricted.

According to Reddit’s official guidance on locking posts, locking prevents new comments from users who are not moderators of that community or Reddit administrators.

Locking does not make the post disappear.

Community members can still:

  • view the post if it otherwise remains accessible;
  • vote on the post;
  • edit comments they previously created;
  • delete their own existing comments.

That makes locking different from both removal and archiving.

Can You Comment on a Locked Reddit Post?

Ordinary community members cannot add new comments to a locked post.

Moderators of the community and Reddit administrators are not subject to the same restriction.

Existing comments do not automatically disappear simply because the post has been locked.

If harmful comments were already published before the lock was applied, those comments may therefore remain part of the discussion unless they are separately removed or deleted.

Can You Vote on a Locked Reddit Post?

Yes.

Reddit’s current locking system still allows community members to vote on a locked post.

This is one of the easiest ways to distinguish a locked post from an archived post:

Locked post: new comments are restricted, but voting can continue.

Archived post: both new comments and voting are disabled.

Can a Locked Reddit Post Be Unlocked?

Yes.

Moderators can unlock a previously locked post, which reopens it for commenting.

This means that a lock is not necessarily a permanent status.

A moderator may lock a discussion temporarily because:

  • the conversation is becoming difficult to manage;
  • the post is attracting rule-breaking comments;
  • the thread requires moderation attention;
  • new comments are no longer useful or appropriate.

The reason for a lock depends on the circumstances and the community involved.

Does Locked Mean the Reddit Post Was Removed?

No.

A post can be locked and remain publicly accessible.

Locking primarily changes whether new comments can be added. It is not, by itself, a content-removal action.

If the concern is that the post itself is harmful, the relevant question is not whether it has been locked but whether another reporting, moderation or removal route may apply.

What Does “Archived” Mean on Reddit?

An archived Reddit post is an older post where certain interactions have been disabled.

However, there is an important change from how Reddit is sometimes described in older guides online:

Not every Reddit post is automatically archived after six months.

Reddit currently allows community moderators to turn post archiving on or off through their community settings.

Reddit’s current community settings documentation states that when the archive-posts option is enabled, posts in that community are automatically archived after six months.

When Does Reddit Archive a Post?

When a community has post archiving enabled, posts older than six months are automatically archived.

If the community does not have that setting enabled, users should not assume that every six-month-old post will automatically enter the archived state.

This distinction matters because older articles and forum discussions may still describe six-month archiving as a universal Reddit rule.

Can You Comment on an Archived Reddit Post?

No.

When a post has been archived under Reddit’s current archive system, users cannot add new comments to it.

The existing post and discussion may still remain available to read, but participation is restricted.

Can You Vote on an Archived Reddit Post?

No.

Archived posts no longer accept votes.

This creates a useful distinction:

  • Locked: comments restricted, voting still possible.
  • Archived: comments restricted and voting disabled.

Is Every Reddit Post Archived After Six Months?

No.

Reddit currently gives community moderators control over whether post archiving is enabled.

If a community enables the setting, its posts are automatically archived after six months.

If archiving is disabled, age alone should not be treated as proof that a post is archived.

Does Archived Mean Deleted?

No.

Archiving changes interaction with the post rather than automatically deleting it.

An archived post may still:

  • remain accessible through its URL;
  • show its existing comments;
  • remain relevant to a person or business;
  • potentially remain visible through search engines.

If a post is harmful, the fact that it is old or archived does not by itself resolve the underlying problem.

What Does “Quarantined” Mean on Reddit?

Quarantine is different from both locking and archiving because it is not primarily a post-level status.

Reddit applies quarantine to communities.

According to Reddit’s official documentation on quarantined communities, Reddit administrators may place a community in quarantine when its content is not necessarily prohibited but may be highly offensive or upsetting, or in certain cases involving communities that promote hoaxes requiring additional scrutiny.

A post inside that subreddit may therefore appear to be “quarantined,” but technically the restriction applies to the community containing the post.

Why Does Reddit Quarantine a Community?

The purpose of quarantine is to reduce the chance that users encounter the community or its content unintentionally.

It gives users additional context and requires an explicit decision before they enter the community.

Quarantine is not the same as Reddit deciding that every piece of content in the community must be deleted.

Quarantined communities and their users still have to follow Reddit’s sitewide rules and remain subject to enforcement.

What Changes When a Reddit Community Is Quarantined?

Reddit currently applies several important restrictions.

A quarantined community:

  • displays a warning before users access its content;
  • requires users to explicitly opt in to viewing it;
  • does not appear in non-subscription-based feeds such as Popular;
  • is excluded from Reddit Search;
  • is excluded from Reddit recommendations;
  • does not generate revenue;
  • may be subject to additional product restrictions.

These restrictions primarily affect access, discovery and how Reddit distributes the community’s content.

Is a Quarantined Reddit Community Banned?

No — not necessarily.

A banned community and a quarantined community are different conditions.

Quarantined communities continue to exist under additional restrictions.

Users who knowingly opt in may still be able to view the community, subject to Reddit’s current access controls and applicable rules.

A community can still face further enforcement if it violates Reddit Rules.

Can a Reddit Quarantine Be Removed?

Potentially.

Reddit provides an appeal process for moderators of quarantined communities.

Its current guidance says moderators seeking removal of a quarantine should explain meaningful changes to their moderation practices and provide evidence that those changes have been applied consistently for at least one month.

That process is primarily relevant to community moderators rather than users trying to understand the status of one particular post.

Locked vs Archived vs Quarantined: What Is the Difference?

The simplest way to understand the three terms is to look at what each one actually controls.

Locked primarily controls whether new comments can be added to a post or comment.

Archived limits interaction with an older post when its community has archiving enabled: users can no longer vote or add comments.

Quarantined applies to a community and changes how users access and discover that community across Reddit.

Another useful distinction is who or what creates the status:

  • Locked: moderation action on a post or comment.
  • Archived: result of a community’s archive-post setting once an eligible post reaches the required age.
  • Quarantined: action applied by Reddit administrators to a community.

These statuses can therefore have very different consequences even when the same Reddit post appears restricted in some way.

Do Locked, Archived or Quarantined Statuses Mean the Content Was Removed?

No.

This is the most important limitation to understand.

A Reddit post may be:

  • locked and still visible;
  • archived and still visible;
  • located inside a quarantined community and still exist.

A status affecting interaction or discovery is not automatically the same as content deletion.

If another person published a Reddit post and the real concern is having that content reviewed or removed, our guide on how to get a Reddit post removed when someone else posted it explains the main options separately.

What If a Locked or Archived Reddit Post Is Harmful?

The post status does not determine whether the content violates Reddit Rules or a community rule.

A locked post can still contain harmful content.

An archived post can still contain:

  • negative claims;
  • personal information;
  • harassing material;
  • old comments;
  • content affecting a person or business.

If the content itself is the problem, consider the underlying issue rather than focusing only on the status label.

Questions worth asking include:

  • Who originally published the content?
  • Does a subreddit rule apply?
  • Could the content violate Reddit’s sitewide rules?
  • Are harmful comments also involved?
  • Is private or sensitive information being shared?
  • Has the content also become visible in Google Search?

Removal is not automatic or guaranteed. The content, context and available routes need to be considered individually.

What If the Problem Involves an Entire Reddit Thread?

Sometimes the status of the original post is only one part of a wider problem.

For example, a post may have been locked only after a long discussion had already developed underneath it.

Those existing comments may continue to matter even though nobody can add new ones.

A wider thread may include:

  • multiple harmful comments;
  • several users repeating the same claim;
  • personal information;
  • arguments spreading across several parts of the discussion;
  • content that remains accessible long after commenting has stopped.

In that situation, reviewing only the status of the original post may not explain the full problem.

Our guide on how to delete a negative Reddit thread explains how to assess a wider discussion when more than one part of the thread may be relevant.

Can a Locked or Archived Reddit Post Still Appear in Google?

Yes.

Locking and archiving affect activity on Reddit. They do not inherently mean that the page has been removed from the web.

If the Reddit URL remains accessible, a search engine may still be able to display information about that page.

This means there can be two separate questions:

Reddit status: Is the post locked, archived or otherwise restricted on Reddit?

Search visibility: Is the Reddit URL appearing in Google Search?

Those issues should not be treated as the same process.

If Google visibility is the concern, read our guide on how to remove a Reddit post from Google Search results.

For quarantined communities, remember that Reddit’s own documentation specifically describes restrictions within Reddit Search, recommendations and non-subscription feeds. That should not be treated as a universal statement about every external search engine.

How to Identify What Happened to a Reddit Post

If you are unsure what status you are seeing, start with the behavior of the post.

You Can See the Post but Cannot Add a New Comment

The post may be locked.

Check whether voting is still available.

If it is, that is consistent with a locked post rather than an archived post.

The Post Is Old and You Cannot Vote or Comment

The post may be archived.

If the community has archive posts enabled and the post is more than six months old, Reddit’s archive system may explain why interaction is disabled.

You See a Warning Before Entering the Community

The subreddit may be quarantined.

Quarantine is applied at community level, so the warning and reduced discovery affect the environment containing the post rather than changing one isolated submission into a “quarantined post.”

The Post or Content Is No Longer Available

That is a different situation.

Content being unavailable may involve:

  • author deletion;
  • moderator removal;
  • Reddit enforcement;
  • a private or restricted community;
  • another change unrelated to locking or archiving.

A missing post should therefore not automatically be described as locked, archived or quarantined without checking what actually happened.

A Simple Way to Understand Reddit Post Status

If you only remember four points from this guide, remember these:

Locked: new comments are restricted, but voting can continue.

Archived: on communities with archiving enabled, older posts stop accepting votes and comments after six months.

Quarantined: Reddit applies the restriction to an entire community, requiring opt-in and reducing discovery across Reddit.

Removed: a different condition altogether.

A Reddit status tells you something about how the platform is currently treating the post or community. It does not, by itself, tell you whether harmful content has been deleted or whether another removal route may apply.

When Should You Look Beyond the Reddit Post Status?

A locked, archived or quarantined status can explain how Reddit is currently treating content, but the status alone may not resolve the underlying problem.

A broader review may be useful when:

The value of reviewing the situation is in identifying the actual content problem and the options that may be relevant rather than assuming that a Reddit status automatically resolves it.

Removal Reddit reviews each situation individually and does not guarantee that a particular Reddit post, comment or thread can be removed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Reddit Post Statuses

What does archived mean on Reddit?

If a community has post archiving enabled, its posts are automatically archived after six months. Archived posts no longer accept votes or new comments.

A locked Reddit post no longer accepts new comments from ordinary users. Community members can still vote and manage their own existing comments, while moderators can later unlock the post.

Quarantine is a status Reddit applies to an entire community rather than an individual post. Users must explicitly opt in to viewing the community, and Reddit restricts its visibility in Search, recommendations and non-subscription feeds.

Is every Reddit post archived after six months?

No. Reddit currently allows communities to turn post archiving on or off. The six-month archive rule applies when that community setting is enabled.

No. Locking and archiving restrict interaction with a post but do not automatically delete the content.

Not necessarily. A quarantined community can continue to exist under additional access and discovery restrictions and remains subject to Reddit Rules and further enforcement.
